Even in New York, from time to time, I’m always going to have cracked safety glass in the gutter. Often the burglarized vehicle is already sitting there, the seats are cleaned up empty, the glove box is open. I’m astounded that anyone in NYC would leave anything in their car to tempt a thief, but I think our declining crime rates are making people complacent.

To those who live in places where theft is not a concern, a vehicle may be a handy place to store items. Off-road truck hardware maker Smittybilt makes a line of equipment for only this purpose: their G.E.A.R. seat covers use what looks like the PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) webbing to modularly mount a set of pockets, pouches, and tool rolls. The bulk of the G.E.A.R. line-up is custom-fitted with different Jeep models (CJ, Wrangler, and Wrangler Unlimited models from the mid-70s to the present), although they also offer Universal models without seat covers.
